Saturday was a fun ride, Luca & me hit Stewart with a goal of 30 miles in no more then 4 hours. I really had no clue what I was doing, and my main objective was to finish. We would get 5 sheets, each with 5 or so locations/questions that could only be answered at those locations. Once you finished a sheet you'd get another to work on.

I (we) made some mistakes, even when I started working/riding with J from Steiners. When we finished sheet 2 we were told we were in 3rd/4th! cool. but then we wasted 10-15 minutes on one I already knew (but 2nd guessed myself). It was pretty fun/insane to be racing all over Albany, blasting red lights, passing cars, people asking us what to hell we were doing. So with 2 answers left to get we see another strong rider and he already had the one we were headed to, that one wasnt too far away and then we saw him again at the last one - all that was left was the climb to the finish (a bar!). I drafted J a bunch that night so I had no plans to go for a sprint to beat him to the finish. Soze checked our sheets and I gota "2" witten on mine.
me: "Huh, whats the 2 for"
Soze: "2nd place"
me: "Woo hoo!!!".

I checked the time, it was midnight - 3 hours to do the race, way longer then I expected. So we hung out, drank some beer, waited for the others to finish, then they did awards - I grabbed the roadie carbon bars. more hanging out, then up to "217" for food. Finially I started my commute back home, it was past 4am by the time I got there.

Overall the race was pretty crazy and way fun, I had such a great time and meet some pretty cool people.

909 & The course was changed up some, with a new never ridden nasty downhill, wet, loose shale, drops, pretty much like riding a DH trail there. I was in 2nd figuring just maintain my spot, finish up & win the series, then I round a corner and there is the leader Scott with a mechanical, so I spent the rest of the race pushing hard not knowing if he's 45 seconds back or DNF'd. I did hold him off, and more importantly finished and won the series (expert class) !!

Donuts & Buffalo roadie ride

Yes, you will see a few Buffalos and yes you will eat hot apple cider donuts!

My place, 8:45 am tomorrow (saturday)

50-60 miles, no killer climbs this time.

VT50

My 1st attemopt at the Vt50 report:
Reg'd Saturday, then dinner with pigboy & JBP & their relatives, & off to bed early.
Out of the Hotel at 4:45am, racer meeting at 5:30...and it was cold! (38).

I went off in the 1st wave at 6:15, course was mix of dirt roads, single track & double track and a TON of climbing (8500ft), they had 9 rest stops stocked with anything from bacon to gummie bears to watermelon! (so I heard, I didnt stop at any). I screwed up on one turn early, lost maybe 5 minutes, and never felt like I was riding strong but was only off my time goal by 12 minutes.

The start was nuts - it was semi dark, I had no clue of the course...the 1st few miles were slightly downhill dirt roads, picture 150 plus mtn bikers bunched up doing 25-30mph and no one had a light!!! Even thou it was a 50 mile loop there was almost always another rider around which is cool. Sometimes the climbs seemed to never (and I mean never!) stop. The course was pretty awesome, not very technical - and I cant really remember a flat section - you were either climbing or descending. The volunteers rocked! So many people out on the course cheering you on....I hope they know how appreciated that was. And all of the riders were cool, I had no passing or getting passed issues.I know I did an extra .5 miles but according to my cyclometer I had 52 miles...when you're spent and expecting it be done at 50.5, that extra 1.5 of climbing is Brutal !

Hmm, what else...BrynaN won expert/pro SeniorII, and was 2nd female in behind Lea Davidson (pro trek rider)!!
My female Hardcore 24 teammate (LaurenK) won sport SeniorII division!
My other Hardcore teammate/friend (JenL) won Novice SeniorII!
And JohnPeters was 2nd in Novice MasterII!
Awesome job you all!!

My time was 5:41 which put me in 5oth/79 in expert/pro Vet - and 150th out of 686 overall. Next year, top 100??

Besides all the food/drink stops, everyone got a finish medal, a tshirt and hat at Reg, plus a BBQ afterwards. I hung out after for several hours chatting with various friends, oh and there was a band too.

When I left at 4:30 I noticed people still fininshing.....thats a long time to be racing your mtn bike

Crazy, epic, tough, painful and amazingly well organized. I'll be back next year.

http://www.skipix.com/skipixv2/viewlargeimage.php?lang=en&photosetid=1566&filename=DSC_8163.jpg

Pats Peak Solo (12 hours)

This weekend, my 1st solo endurance race. Found out later Terry won Cat 5 (35+).

Then we did the cambridge 1/2 century 2 state loop. It was a really nice no killer climb loop. It's actually 55 miles. Heather swears she saw a shark!. Then we rented cruiser bikes and pedaled down to the southern most spot in all the US (90 miles to Cuba). Also did some pool time & dinner near Duval st.

day5=check out, we got an early start so we stopped at a state park in Key Largo, hung at the beach for 90 min's before finishing the drive to Ft. Laud airport

another day

yesterday I did some weights, then Ruby Tuesdays & the movie "Children of Men"

team?

Do I want to be on a real team this year? I kind of like being the unkown in whatever clothes and doing my best to keep up/sometimes beat the dudes in their team kits. A team would be cool for having people to train with and (hopefully) the social aspect. Plus i could apply for this team and get turned down - i hate rejection, but the flip side is I could turn that into anger/motivation. you know, that I'll show them kind of deal. What to do?

last night was back to volley ball, we switched the team around a bit - Debbie & Renee are in, which will make this season more fun...and hopefully with more W's

After volleyball I headed to planet Fitness, I am usually there much earlier. TT starting at 7pm, we got there early and I was assigned the #1 plate, and entered in the SS catagory. I was the only SS and only 29er. My goal was to do the 8 or so mile course in under an hour, not get passed and then compare my times to the sport & expert fields. I suffered on several climbs but did my goal, no one passed me and finished in 54:17. Obviously I won the SS class, what was cool was I had the 3rd fastest time! The sole semi pro and the winner of the expert class (he got me by 15 seconds) was #1 & #2 overall.

So 13.5 hours later (8:30am) I lined up for the All Holows race, 2 hour, most laps win. I and 15 others entered Male open, again I was the only SS and only 29er. I had a great start and was on the wheel of the 3rd place guy. The course is short, and I was doing 12-13 minute laps, and at one point moved into 3rd. I couldnt hold it but just kept pushing and I was super happy coming in 4th with 11 laps. I beat a couple people that have always beat me in the past. Oh, the 1st & 2nd place dudes are both pros, and 3rd place is a real strong expert.

This was my 1st time racing 29, 1st time racing SS, and 1st time racing rigid. Talk about climbing.......Petersburg pass (which has been on my to do list for a while) was the big climb, and easier than I anticipated but the hills never stopped coming..I'd say 6,000ft in the 67 miles. Some of the roads we biked were new to me, and definitely the stuff that should make it into Tequila Doug's Century (coming this fall!)

One dude at mile 48 or so hit a climb hard, I chased...we dropped the group (he wanted to go fast cause he was on his new bling bike!!). We decided to keep the break going........and we were sitting in the shade of a tree as the group rolled into the parking lot at the end of the ride. good stuff

http://webmhcc.org/profiles/petersburg.htm

Monkey Fest @ Kingdom, HF# 9 & tired

Monkey Fest was awesome, 20 plus riders, stayed at a cool ass lodge, lots of riding on the best trails, great beer, great food & great people - cant get much better. oh, Sidewinder trail- what a freaking blast.

HF race #9, I didnt have much umph - I need a few days off the bike. Plenty of camping, toliets, bike washes, showers, and potable water.

The course: 4.7 miles, 870 feet of climbing, mix of singletrrack, ski slope crossings, and couple short sections of fire roads. Way over average ran equaled some muddy sections, but the new ST downhill section was virtually mud free. It was one of the sweetest, flowiest, smooth, long sections of downhills I ever had the pleasure of riding!!

The Folks at Pats Peak and S&W sports try super hard to put on a great, fun & challanging event and want feedback from us racers to make it bigger & better every year. This year they even had a band playing on the deck and a DH & kids race

I signed up for the 12 hour 2 person male cat. w/my buddy Wiley.
A friend and former teammate (Splat) was also in the same catagory.
Our plan was to do doubles. Wiley went 1st & threw down a fast lap and was the 1st back to the transition tent, and no one caught him on his 2nd lap. My turn to do two laps and no one caught me either. Actually we were doing really well for 10 laps (no one passed either of us).
So we had the overall lead of all 3 races/all divisions, and that was damn cool.

BUT on lap 11 things went down hill fast being we both started bonking. Well whats more than bonking? My last lap was torture, it took me forever to complete, I got sick 3 or 4 times.....and I even went to the EMT's after. Wiley was also totally bonked but still got in 2 more (slow) laps.
He stopped at our pit to wait to cross the finish being neither us had any interest in doing another lap, while waiting he got sick too.

We actually thought we still won but somehow the team in 5th went crazy and jumped into 1st place!

I'm proud of our 2nd place, I definitely left everything I had out on the course.

And thanks Splat, pony tail girl and the other riders that stopped to see if I was ok/needed help during my last lap (I felt so crappy at one point I was off the bike laying down), and the EMT guy that made sure I survived!

ps: This was my first ever race that I(we) won cash!! woot!

pics:
Wiley w/the run win, and you can see Splat in the RM jersey
http://www.douglas1.com/images/P1000383s.jpg

yup, it was warm
http://www.douglas1.com/images/P1000396s.jpg

1st lap
http://www.douglas1.com/images/P1000392s.jpg

Splat
http://www.douglas1.com/images/P1000399s.jpg

me
http://www.douglas1.com/images/patspeak/doug.jpg

band
http://www.douglas1.com/images/patspeak/band.jpg

course
http://www.douglas1.com/images/patspeak/course.jpg

me collpsed
http://www.douglas1.com/images/patspeak/collapsed.jpg

finish
http://www.douglas1.com/images/patspeak/finish.jpg

HF#7

They cancelled it after I left work, ended up 6 of us showed up..so we headed out to ride Sundays Norba Course.......eventually dwindled down to 2 to fully complete it (me & Not a big turn out so they did a Mass start (instead of 2 min seperating catagories). I pushed hard for the 1st lap, was keeping up with 2 other 4 lap'rs, then lost contact. Start of #4, Samantha yelled out "Go for it Doug, they're not that far ahead". I couldnt see anone, but ok..lets go. I hit the open road/field section, and yup theres 2 riders maybe 2-3 minuites ahead, I pushed hard on the dirt road and field and caught up a lot before we went back into the ST. I didnt see them again to the climb, Kellogg was running his bike, I slowly caught the other dudes wheel, and we both caught Kellog, but I didnt have enough to pass on the short flat section, and the DH was too fast/hairy to try a pass, so I finished on their wheels..made me wish we were doing 5 laps!

And Selwitz (3 laps 18-44), and myself (4 laps open) have both moved into 1st overall!! But here's the issue, this year they are dropping 4 races, which could take me from 1st to off the podium....yeah, so big surprise that I dont like the new "drop 4 rule"

Team Twin Six

I finally ( I can be such a procastinator) sent my info in to join up with Team Twin Six. (note: there's 9 days in Hell week) Day one was the No moon century, no moon? so what you say? Well the ride started at 7:30........thats 7:30 PM and there would be no moon to help us see. She said the pace would be slowish (15-16 avg) so I figured I could hang, and said I'm in!
We deciced on a the sweat series century route being it was familiar and should be low traffic roads, however the one concern was there would be no open anything from mile 30 to 88, so at 30 you better stock up on fluids!
We had almost 1 1/2 hours of light which put us at our 1st stop at a stewarts at mile 30.
The night was awesome, clear skies, no wind (humid but no biggie), everyone riding was super cool, and we worked well together, the course was challanging and fun, my legs were cooperating, everything just clicked to create a super enjoyable road ride.
I think we freaked a few people out with our lights (red flashing, blue flashing and white bar/helmet light) - had to look pretty weird coming down a totally unlit road
I was really happy to be able to finish pretty strong (I'm usually on the verge of bonking the last 30/40 miles)
oh, and not sure what happened to the planned 16 mph avg...I guess we were having too much fun pushing things a little bit

the #'s (a new PB for me!!)
102.1 miles
4650 ft climbed
5:37 (saddle time)
18.25 avgride
end time: 1:55am

it was a tough choice between denny's and a bar after, but the hunger pains won so we picked Dennys

2,000

Did an easy local road ride that put my '06 miles (including trainer miles) over 2,000 !!

HF#4 & ouch

I raced yesteray at Dalton. But when I showed all up it was 80% local racer boys (CBRC, NAV, etc kits). Oh crap, I'm gonna be so dropped.

The pace wasn't bad at the start, chatted w/this dude named Steve (one of the few others not wearing a team kit). Said hi Terry B. (he's super fast ), then we hit a climb, then another..I was doing my best, about 8 people in front pulling away, and the other 20 behind me..I look back and there gone! holy crap! Now we descending, 2 groups of 4, then me busting my ass to catch up.....I kept at it, but the gap was growing. 2 guys caught me, we ended up forming all own little pack. Did I mention it was raining? I couldn't see worth crap. One of the guys was Steve, and the other was a stronger rider than us but he would slow down a bit so we stayed together.

After a bit the rain tapered, then on a climb we saw 2 riders up ahead, caught them, said hi, then dropped them. cool out all those racer boys only 6 ahead of us. I am told of a fast dh ahead, it was sweat...my cyclometer couldn't handle it, it read 00 mph, but the other guy said he was doing 56mph. nice. So that dude wqs giving me some pointers, we worked on doing 20/30 second pulls to finish up the ride. back at the parking lot, it was dry! Many times I was on the verge of switching to a take it easy ide, but I didn't..I was pretty happy about that & my avg speed was really good for me (especially on a hilly rainy loop)

the #'s
38.3 miles
1:59
19.3 mph

Holiday Farms#3

I passed at #2 being that day was nothing but rain, then kicked myself for missing it (it stoped raining for the race)

Again, right to the back of the back at the start, a rider (some pro) flatted and I passed him. Interestingly, he fixed his bike and finished the race ahead of me....but never passed me. Hmm?

A 3 lapper easily caught & passed me, another (J. wojniak who does solo 24's) passed and I stayed with him for a lap or so, and then 2 more...but I passed them back in the sketchy DH section, but right before the end of their race I slowed down, and let them by to battle it out for their finish. My last lap was lonely, only rider i saw was when I passed a 2 lapper female

pot luck after, talked to gary (he's 50 somehing)..1 of his HF season goal is to not let me catch him (he does 3 laps). Mine is to stop letting 3 lappers catch me. Oh, and he's doing the VT50!

A group (MHCC) road ride tonight. Been a while since I did one. I want it to be painful.

expert class is no joke!

damn, the expert class is no joke! By the the top of the 1st little climb I was already in last, and I knew then it was going to be a long day! I caught up to a dude I know "Orm", he was rocking the 29'r hardtail. So the battle was on for last place, me on my 29lb 26 FS vs Orm on his 26 lb 29'r HT !

Course was mostly doubletrack, hilly but no big climb...and a super muddy hike a bike jeep road thrown in for fun. I pulled away from ORM on the first lap, pushing hard on the DH sections, but a mile or so into lap #2, I hear a bike nad then hear ORM saying its just me! oh yeah, great!
I dropped a chain shifting, he goes by..I slowly catch up and folow him for the rest of the lap.
End of lap two, I grab a new water bottle (my rig only holds one) and next time I go to grab it, its not there!

lap 3 was ORM following me, I didnt feel strong and was taking it easy, I know he was trying to find where I was slower and where I was faster. At the start of lap#4 while I,m trying to get somee cups of water, he hits the hill pretty hard, and I have nothing to match. I didnt see him again until after the race. Props to him for throwing down a strong 4th lap.

Somewhere along the way we passed someone in our group cause I ended up in 15th, with 16 finishers and 3 dnf's

I have my work cut out for me, I need to hit the hills, get some intensity in, and find some faster riders to make me suffer during the week.

Bryna, Mark G, & Terry B all podiumed in expert. Selwitz & Christan raced sport, Selwitz was 5th, and I dont think Christan made it into the top 10.

the #'s: 4 laps, 2:22, and about 19 miles

oh crap=MOTM # 1

My 1st expert level Norba race is Sunday..winterclove Inn/round top, NY

http://www.mastersofthemountains.com/schedule.htm

I won sport last year, I just want to survive and and not be last.
Selwitz, Samantha, Orm, and Graber are also racing.

I plan to go down early and do a preride before the beginners/sports start. My hub went @11:55, my race was scheduled for 12:00 at the top of the mountain......I had to go back to the bottom to borrow a wheel. I didnt make it to the start until 12:30, around 10-15 minutes after my group started. Ack!
The wheel I borrowed was a 8 spd, mine's 9 so I had plenty of shifting problems.
I should mention the weather, it was sprinkling, wind was gusting up to 50 mph......and it was maybe 40 degrees.
So Off I went, I didnt have granny or 2, ok adjust to that. It was tough to be motivated w/starting so far behind. I did start catching riders, beginners...but it helped the motivation. ....and I passed Jason just before the end of lap # 1. And Laszlo gave me some encouraging words as I passed thru the start/finish. Next two laps were about staying motivated, and dealing with the weather. At lap 2.5 I passed a dude in my group, and I think I lapped a couple beginners.
I ended up in 5th out of 7, with the winner beating me by 13 or so minutes.....damn mechanical!
Jason got podium (3rd out of 3)

I helped Ken move to an apartment last night, now my shoulder hurts again.

Race tomorrow

Plattekill! I did go for a jog yetserday. The Troy Turkey trot 5K is 45 days away. Last year I trained by jogging 5K's. This year I added another 1k or so to my route and that includes a short but steep hill. My plan is to take it easy as my body gets use to jogging. Yesterday was my 2nd jog since spring, I walked up & down that hill. The turkey trot is a bad race to go for a pb (personal best) being so many people do the race , picture a traffic jam at the start........but a pb is the current plan, maybe a 24:00? that would hurt, a lot !

progressive & volleyball

Progresive is hooking me up w/a improved (all steel) Heim Joint.

Volleyball was good, we were a little off but stil won 3 outta 4 games

Work has been so boring lately.

road ride & shock issues

Shock linkage issues in my 2004 Iron horse Hollowpoint RL expert, I need these 2 little rubber bands and this plastic bushing for the Progressive air shock. Ended up in a group of older guys, we got off course, so we made our own w/some extra hills......ended up me & one other, I had a hard time hanging with him on the climbs...and he's 25 or more years older than me. impressive.

My 2nd Century & DH'ing @ Mount Snow

Heather & Wiley picked me up way early Sat. morning, Escalade w/the Plains trailer, big pimping yo! We had a group of 8 including several people on xc bikes! It was my 1st time all year on the DH bike, snow doesnt have a ton of trails and the main trail up top has some uphills...a 45 lbs bike is not fun to ride up hills..ugh. The weather was super nice. Our group started droping fast...crashes, broken bike parts........Wiley hurt his wrist pretty bad.....maybe broken??

Sunday I biked 10 miles to Jason's, and we took his car up to Clifton park> Sweet n Fall Century, maybe 30 riders, sag wagon, my plan was to not go up front..........but I did, 19 mph plus pace until we hit stop #1 @ 20 or so miles. Regroup, then a few miles up was the hill climb/desent race option. About 2 miles before it started I busted out front and went pretty hard......I wasnt doing the climb but they didnt know that...haha! suckers! I just rode right past the climb/option, from there to stop#2 (mile 57) it was me and one other dude.
I had a turkey sub, and chilled for a while as the others came in......then went to pee, came out & almost everyone was gone (payback?) I caught up quickly, then tried to go off with 2 others but was dropped.......hmm stuck in no mans land. The turkey sub wanted out, little hill after little hill...my pace kept dropping. 2 riders caught up, I hung with them for a couple miles then faded back, stayed solo to the finish. I was suprised to find out I was 5th back, not that it mattered...finishing matters!! A few of us endeded at TGIF's, food, beers & tequilla...and a little on the noisey side. Real good times.

mile 50=2:40
mile 98=5:30, 17.9 mph avg
total for the day=108

oh, almost forgot Heather told me to touch her ass, I did...its a nice ass !!
